Does watching Dubs make you a sinner?

On the way home today I heard a few kids debating over how they preferred their Naruto, dubbed or subbed. I, of course, prefer subs myself, but does watching dubs make you a sinner? Thinking back one of my very first anime was dubbed, Outlaw Star. I don’t remember it to be all THAT bad, they didn’t try to put any funny accent on, they said “fuck” or “shit” at the right time, so as far as I could remember, it wasn’t terrible. On the other hand, I have heard Shana’s English counterpart which made me throw up a couple of times, being a Shana fan boy doesn’t help (doesn’t sound loli at all!). Japanese shows should be viewed in Japanese, make sense? I am pretty sure dubbed anime have brought many people into the world of anime, but do those people stick to dub, or do they switch once they discover subs, i really don’t know. But here is what i think, things are best left in their original state, since both subs and dubs provide a way for those who don’t know japanese to understand the show, they both change it in one way or another, but subs does it in a more subtle way. Of course not all dubs are SHIT bad, it’s just that I prefer my anime subbed.

Loli never sounds the same in English, this is a fact. ^_^ Other than that, i don’t really think anything sounds that bad that i want to rip my ears out….. hmm… unless Negima’s dodgy English accent counts (even though he’s meant to be Welsh).
Well, to be honest. I liked Shana’s Dubbed voice, rofl I think it was sexy… in a way D;
I haven’t heard dubbed Shana, but after hearing that, maybe I shouldn’t… One of my first animes was Outlaw Star dubbed as well and in my honest opinion, it was pretty well done as well. But I guess you get to a point where you’re just a little more attentive, and well, to the attentive ear, most dubs don’t sound that great or even decent. Some have pulled through but the vast majority has seriously degraded how the original felt. But at least it spread it.
I started on dubs, but when I found subs, I always use those now and have never looked back XD
Over the years, I have become sensitive to how much
time watching anime takes. If time is an issue, then I
prefer watching the dub since I then can concentrate
my eyes on the animation itself. If time is not an issue,
then I will watch the sub since I figure the translation
is closer to original meaning (no compromises due to
lip synch)…of course when I do watch the sub I will
almost always have to rewatch sections since I will have
missed a key point in the animation or just missed
reading the sub itself.
It’s interesting, if it wasn’t for dubs i might very well not have gotten into Anime, but now that I am into it, as Deranged said, I get more attentive and so they don’t sound even decent. Also agree with Mochi about rewatching certain scenes, since i’ve taken up blogging, taking screen shots and things, i realise there are little things i miss on the animation because i was busy reading the subs. So i guess both subs and dubs have their ups and downs, for me its subs ^^
You watch enough and even that doesn’t seem to be a problem… concentrating on subs, what’s on screen and something in real life in the background haven’t been a problem for me. I guess the one time I’ve ever been challenged to read the subs carefully was episode 5 of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya but then again there were three different lines of text floating across the screen, i bet it would have been difficult to understand anyhow….
But that might just be me (person who watches or rewatches some stuff in twice the speed.. there, subtitles come in very handy) XD
I like most people started of with dub, and didnt think anything bad of it because I had nothing to compare it to. But now that I watch it subbed I have something to compare it to, and for the most part dubbing is done badly, comparitively, often to the point of crazy.
Running Kid, as you are a Shana fanboy (so am I, but to a lesser extent :P), and you originally watched it subbed, you are never going to like it as much as the original. It’s like having your favourite film remade, it’ll never be as good, to you, as the orginal.
In any form, anime or movies, I prefer subbed all the way. If something is dubbed I do my all to avoid it. It may be the best dub ever done but I wouldnt care because I would like to have it in it’s original state. The voices contribute to the atmosphere and overall feel of the anime or movie, and I feel that dub just ruins this.
lol, i don’t mind subs or dubs… only hardcore fans would… then again it always depends on the VAs…. there has been so many horrible dubs so its probably why people prefer subs so their ears wouldnt bleed..

I prefer my anime subbed. Sure, my first anime was a dubbed anime like pokemon, Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing (Classics with Hiro), but once I discovered subbed anime, and just about every other anime availible to me thru the interent I pretty much stopped watching all T.V including the dubbed anime and onyl watch anime. Since it is by far better than anything I can find on the television by channel surfing.
Note: For DBZ I first watched it dubbed, I tried to watch it subbed but I just couldn’t stand listening the original voices. Maybe bcuz I 1st watched the dubbed (b4 knowing about anime at all) and liked it, is why I couldn’t get used to the original voices.
For Dubbed Naruto I will never enjoy the dubbed voices for the same reasons above and many other I did not say.
Genn, I think you are absoluely right. In most cases I believe people, from outside Japan, 1st experience anime dubbed. Then they go on and discover Subs, which is often alot faster and imo better.
