Pumpkin Scissors 23 & 24 (END): Hmm

Thoughts: An unusual ending but a pretty unsatisfying one. It’s nice to see an Anime that is a tribute to war, rather than a “War is Awesome, lets blow things up” series. Many think what this series lacked was plot and story, and some even complained about the absence of action. I cannot completely agree with this. Although, it’s true there isn’t much action in Pumpkin Scissors but I’ve established after 10 or so episodes that this show isn’t all about action, it’s about the themes and consequences of war. However, I think when the show started to show some plot, it began to fail. The Silver Wheel was introduced just over half way into the series. Yes, it was interesting. Yes, it got me hooked and Yes I was expecting something to happen! Even though this was the last episode of Pumpkin Scissors it felt like this was just an introduction to this mysterious organization. I didn’t think leaving something like that unfinished or concluded was a good idea.
I think what the producers wanted us to appreciate was not the animation, excitement or even the story. It’s the idea of, the world is not perfect and hence evil will always exist. Quoting Hanks from the ending of Pumpkin Scissors, “The long war corrupted society and allowed all kinds of evil to spread, but there is a unit whose purpose is to eradicate those war damages. The unit’s name Pumpkin Scissors”. This is what I would describe as an open ending, in which the meaning is left for the audience to decide, and this entry is how I chose to interpret it. Of course, if it’s an open ending there is always a chance for a second season, who knows (well the final scene strongly suggests the possibility of this), I personally would like to know more about the Invisible 9. Over all an average series, if you are the type who likes meaningful stories and doesn’t mind if things are left without a conclusion then go ahead, this series is for you but if you are looking for action you better look else where.
P.S- Blog will be down, tomrrow GMT 0700 to 0900. Sorry for the inconvenience
Main problem is that the manga’s still going, so they just left where the last volume ended, sort of. I would have hoped at least for a better attempt at conclusion.
I see, I should read the manga since I cannot wait, especailly after such an ending >.
I have to agree with some of what you said, around epi. 10 i got hooked because the story really started to develop and it was not a good ending (few animes have a good one) but i though there was plenty of action in the show! by the last 4 or 5 episodes though the story line began to crumble under its own weight, there was too much gooing on and the situation wasent believable. They obviously dident want to end it that way but it did in the same respects that Gantz did.
There were action here and there, but I wouldn’t say there is “enough” =P. But then again, PS isn’t about action, the ideas and themes behind it is really nice too.
