Catch Up: Romeo x Juliet - WIN!

This isn’t even close to what I had expected, honestly. Knowing its Romeo and Juliet I thought it would be the Shakespearean crap, which I had to study a few years back. Of course I must be too shallow to comprehend his Masterpieces, but when I saw this I could do nothing but wonder; how come when I did study Romeo and Juliet at school it wasn’t nearly as awesome as this! I mean, Juliet was never a reverse trap, Tybalt never get to own with dual swords, there were most definitely no flying Pegasus and Shakespeare did not star in the play. Then I noticed that this was Romeo x Juliet, a Gonzo production, of course it’s not going to be like the original.

The basic story still revolves around the idea of forbidden love, but the Montague appear to be some what evil and the Capulets are the victims. Apart from the names, there isn’t really that much in common between this and the original, so far the story is headed towards a rebellion lead by the Capulets to regain control. Perhaps Gonzo has over fantasized it and it may be the reason why I feel some might dislike it, but I am really enjoying it.

The animation and music is pretty well done, the made up plot is indeed quite engaging but I got a feeling this ending is going to stick to the traditional one, the question is how they will do it? After seeing episode 9 it feels like Gonzo is trying to suggest this was the source of idea for the play, especially after the conversation between William and Juliet, anyways I am eagerly waiting for the 10th episode.
