Sky Girls OVA: In preparation for the summer.

Thoughts: Lolis in mecha suits, moe? Perhaps, but how was the OVA itself? Well, the story itself isn’t the most original but I think there is a lot of room to expand, which is why I am glad there will be a TV series in a couple of weeks. The first few minutes of the OVA tells us about the history and what had happened to Earth, admittedly it sounded a tiny bit like Gunparade March but I think it worked well as a quick introduction and it set the scene for the rest of the episode. The animation was quite good, as one would expect from an OVA, in particularly the fighting between the worm and the Sonic Divers.

The 3 suits, Reijin, Raijin and Fujin were pretty damn cool, in a way it’s like the ones from Gadget Trial. It’s almost like an exoskeleton to allow the girls to fight with that kind of power and speed. I personally like Reijin the best, since it has a sword and fires lasers rather than the conventional missiles or bullets. Their “Delta lock” reminded me of the delta formation from Mai Otome Zwei a lot, except this one ended with a bang.

Well there wasn’t really much about the characters since it was only 28 minutes, but I think Eika, Karen and Otoha aren’t supposed to be as loli as they are drawn and it’s ironic that Eika calls Otoha a “kid” near the end of the episode. So in general not bad, perhaps the plot is a little mediocre but the cool mecha designs, the overdose of fan service as well as the good animation made it okay. As I said, I think there’s a lot of room to expand and develop, will just have to wait till the summer season to see how it will turn out.

Summary: In year 2079 cell clusters called worms appeared and began to attack humanity, by 2081 one third of the human population was already gone hence in 2 years later humans were forced to use weapons of mass destruction. With this the worms were destroyed, however the price was great. Sea level has risen and only half the land could be used and 90% of the military was wiped out. 2 years later, the worms that were thought to be defeated once again started to attack.

In the middle of the sea there were 2 girls Eika and Otoha, they were enjoying themselves swimming and sunbathing. Suddenly they receive an emergency call to go back to the battle ship. Waiting for them on board the ship was a third girl, Karen, she reports that they arrive in approximately 1minute 30seconds. In the conference room Captain Togo and Admiral Shima argues weather to confront the class 50,000dot worm, that has appeared on the radar or not. Admiral Kadowaki, the man in charge, decides to head straight forward.

As the girls were returning to the changing room to change into their uniforms they meet Tachibana. As he compliments on the girl’s swimsuit he was reminded to do his job properly since he had forgotten to adjust the rudder as Eika requested. Afterwards the girls got changed they headed over to the mission briefing. At the briefing Captain Togo told them about the class 50,000 dot worm they may encounter in the next couple of hours. Since they need to be prepared they will have to be geared up, Otoha complains about how the “motion slits” are uncomfortable to wear for a long period of time. Captain Togo reminded Eika that the admiral wanted result since they need to show success in order for the HQ not to shut down the project.

While the girls were getting ready Admiral Shima reads out the girls profile to Admiral Kadowaki. Ichijo Eika, quick at making decisions, fast reflexes and high stamina, hence she is the leader of the Sonic Divers Unit. Sonomiya Karen, IQ of 170 and also a mechanic. Sakurano Otoha, has shown herself to be a master with a sword however actual qualifications are unknown. After the profiles the worm was already within 200m and not before long, it was headed towards the ship. The girls were alerted and they each entered a room where they were coated with a layer of Nano Skin which protects them in combat and allows them to pilot the Sonic Divers.

The battle has already begun and the battle ship has already started bombarding the worm while the girls prepare to mount themselves on the Sonic Divers. However the catapult and hatches in the hangar were damaged, Outo the mechanic requested to blow the hatch since there wasn’t much time. The Admiral grants permission to do so, as the girls equip themselves with the Sonic Divers Tachibana moves Crane-like robots to protect the Sonic Diver Units in case of another hit. The worm strikes the ship and the ceiling started collapsing, luckily the Sonic Diver units were safe thanks to the shelter from the robots. With the hatch blown up the 3 Sonic Diver Units, Reijin, Raijin and Fujin launches for battle.

At first the battle appears to be going well, however the Nano Skin only has less than half the time left before it expires. Eika, Karen and Otoha was ordered to use the delta lock to finish the worm off, however since the worm was so big it was hard for Otoha to get a lock on the co-ordinates. As she struggles to lock on she was hit and fell like a stone. Luckily she manage to regain consciousness before she hit the water, Otoha claims Reijin helped her. Once again they attempt the Delta lock, this time Otoha swooped down and ran her sword across the back of the worm to get herself into the position. With that they activate the delta formation and the worm was defeated. The HQ was satisfied enough with the result not to shut down the project and the episode ends with Otoha flirting with Tachibana.

Saw this title a bit ago and was interested. The OVA looks good and I’ll probably dig around for it later.

And like any other point of time when more new anime is released I will probably follow this and every other anime at the time when it comes out… =P

Looks quite interesting, it reminds me of that doujin game Gadget which is similar to advance wars, quite a good tactics game if only the in game gfx was better.

Yep, I have refered to it in my post, Gadget Trial. I played it but I didn’t think it was that amazing, Advance wars was probably better though.
