Thoughts: It seems like this is before the OVA and it answered a lot of questions I had in mind. It’s a lot less fan service than I had expected, since the OVA contained so much I almost had an overload. A pretty good first episode, introduction to our sky girls and a brief moment to show the power of the “Sonic Diver” units and their power. The girls are suppose to be 16, but as many of you may have noticed, they don’t look it at all, but oh well we don’t mind some lolis. They probably had to use girls to test pilot these machines because 90% of the younger men died during the battle with the worms.

This pretty much explains where Otoha inherited her swordsmanship, although in the OVA they claimed that she was skillful however Otoha’s performance against her grandfather suggests otherwise. Karen is a super genius and has problems communicating with guys, pretty much covered in the OVA. Eika is just a hard head, she is already in the military as a jet fighter pilot, but of course after getting whooped she wants to pilot something better. Quite a nicely paced episode, didn’t really try and rush to fit a little action into it like other show attempts to do.

The OP and ED are not something to scream about, nothing out of the ordinary there, the animation, however, is quite nice. I wonder how long this series is going to be, I do see quite a lot of potential in this since the parameters and the setting appears to be quite wide, as already suggested in the OVA we will see some romance sneaking in later.

Summary: 2071; life forms called worms appeared and started wiping out the human population. 2073; an international army was formed to combat the worms. 2074; Humans were forced to use weapons of mass destruction, finally the worms has been defeated, however the price was high. Antarctica has melted raising sea level and more importantly only 10% of men between age 20 and 30 were left after the war.

10 years later, a girl was diving deep in the middle of the sea to catch some sort of shell fish. When she was done she saw a military carrier flew past her towards her home island. She immediately headed back. When she returned she was praised for her larger harvest by an old lady. The girl was told the military have some business here. Otoha was her name, after work she returned home to join her grandfather in training at the dojo. Her grandfather was far superior to her, Otoha couldn’t even land one hit. After the training Otoha goes off to see the sunset.

Immediately after she left 2 military officers arrived at her home, they asked Otoha’s mother and grandfather if Otoha would become a test pilot for the military. Furiously the old man told the military officers to get out and never come back, apparently the millitary has already taken his grandson. Meanwhile Otoha was sitting on top of a cliff staring into the sun as she remembered the promise she had made to her brother. They were going to race to see who can become a pilot 1st, as she was reminiscing a young girl officer approached her. She offered Otoha a chance to become test pilot, then she left for Otoha to consider.

A female pilot was having a mock battle against a sonic diver, however she was defeated easily. This pilot was Eika, she wanted something better than a jet fighter. Away from military base, in Sendai Graduate school, a girl genius called Karen was also offered to become apart of the test piloting, she was told that she will be helping a lot of people. Hence she agreed.

Back to Otoha, everyone was bidding their farewell to her and wished her good luck. She looked around for her grandfather however he was no where to be seen. She then remembered the conversation they had at the dinner table yesterday. The conversation involved Otoha’s grandfather refusing to let her join the military, after some persuasion her grandfather said if Otoha could land one hit he would let her do as she wishes. So at the dojo Otoha swung her sword however she couldn’t get close. As she put all her determination in to one hit, she manged to strike her grandfather. Then she realize she was day dreaming, she boarded the ferry and headed towards the open sea. As the ferry left the island she saw her grandfather standing on a rock, it was then she realized that her grandfather let her win, he allowed her to join the military. At a distance the grandfather remembered about yesterday, the determination he saw in his granddaughter’s eyes, he wishes Otoha good luck.
