First Impressions: Real Drive 01

Summary: Haru Masamichi was a diver working for his friend, Kushima. Diving deep into the ocean, Haru was testing out the “Meta-Real” system (Metal for short), a network developed by Kushima which aims to bring men and science together, when suddenly the sea bed flared up and caused him to slip into a coma.
He woke up 50 years later only to find himself weak and feeble, no longer able to dive. Furthermore his brain has been replaced by a cybernetic one. Since then, he lived a simple life. He would fish all day and send his female android, Holon, deep down into the ocean to collect data.

One day he was approached by Aoi Souta, one of Kushima’s men ordered to fetch Haru in order to wire him up to the Metal. However, Haru had no intention of going, all he wanted to do was carry on with his current life style. With the help of Honlon, he drives Souta back to Kushima. It was then Honlon declared that she was going to on a 36 hours vacation and that she had already found a replacement to take care of Haru during her absence. That replacement was a young girl named Aoi Minamo.
As Minamo began to take care of Haru, she notices something strange about the sea. It was flaring up once more, it was the same as 50 years ago. This caused a power cut and chaos broke out at the hospital (the one which Haru was staying at), all the patients were in pain and the cause was unknown. Leaving behind her client, Minamo set off to find a way to restore power.
Meanwhile, Haru somehow emerged into the, what is assumed to be, the Metal to regain his former, younger and stronger body. This virtual environment took the form of the sea. There he rediscovered his ability to dive and set off on a mission to find the cause of the problem.

Thoughts: The animation is absolutely amazing, this sort of eye candy doesn’t come everyday. It’s definitely one of the positive and stronger attributes of this series so far. Unfortunately, I am not sure if I can say the same about the rest of the show. As a first episode, this was slightly confusing and, perhaps this is just me, I think a lot of the key ideas could have been elaborated little more. I guess what I am trying to say is, I think everything was a bit vague, even for a first episode.
The character designs were a little unique in terms of art, all the female looks a bit …er… “chubbier” than your usual moe designs, which in a way make’s the anatomy a little more realistic. Then again, I have no talent in art and my sense and jugement for these things are really bad. At the moment there aren’t enough females for any kind of romantic elements, which I think is pretty good since we get a little too much of that in everything else we watch anyways.
It’s a decent first episode with really nice animation however ,in my opinion I don’t think it serves too well as an introduction. By no means is it bad, but it’s definitely not one for everyone. Nevertheless, I will be giving episode two a go.
Two things disappointed me in this first episode. Why did the android have glasses and why did they have to throw in a high school girl, complete with the sailor uniform and all. It just felt like fan pandering and out of place in an otherwise pretty good sci-fi setup even if it was slightly too confusing as you said.
Agreed. The glasses and sailor uniform seem only to be there for “moe-fication” and to be perfectly honest, I think it feels a little out of place seeing as how the show takes itself fairly seriously.
I do hope they will explain a little bit more about the Meta-Real and perhaps the technologies involved like the cybernetic brain, etc.
The basis for the story is quite interesting to say the least. I might just have to check it.
